As COVID-19 cases continue to trend upwards, hospitals will be at risk

She mentioned that the health/hospital system in Waterloo Region remains the same, however, officials will continue to maintain services as much as possible.

“But this is, and certainly will be further tested with a further rise in (COVID-19) cases.”

Fairclough said from last week (Nov 8 to 15) hospitalizations throughout the region have already seen an increase. “As an example last weekend, from Friday morning to Sunday morning, cases rose from three COVID positive admissions to 20, and at St. Mary’s General Hospital, for example, we had 11 admissions for COVID-19.”

The rise in hospitalizations has triggered St. Mary’s General to adjust operations to support COVID-19 cases while reorganizing spaces in the hospital, as well as assessing all additional services.

With large scale outbreaks in business and workplace settings, and community spread, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang added with the virus already impacting hospitals, it will begin to affect other vulnerable settings.

“It will eventually impact more care homes regardless of all the measures we put in place, it will impact our overall ability as a community to be able to do the necessary hospital and healthcare procedures.”

With these massive outbreaks, the region will be getting some assistance from the Province, as the Ford Government is promising ten additional contact tracers, which will help Public Health increase its ability to contact cases within 24 hours.
